The design depicting a woodpecker sitting in a tree garlanded by flowers and swirling leaves, draws inspiration from the Latin poet Ovid's Metamorphoses. William Morris (1834–1896) who was associated with the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, was a founder of the British Arts & Crafts Movement. The acclaimed designer, artist, and writer was a major contributor to the revival of traditional British textile arts and methods of production.
